Leonard Michael Schuman was born on 4 March 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his B.A. from Oberlin College (Oberlin, OH) in 1934, an M.S. in 1939 and an M.D. in 1940 from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH). From 1941-1947, Dr. Schuman worked as an officer for the U.S. Public Health Service. The Public Health Nursing program at the University of Minnesota began in 1918 as a four month course offered through the School for Nurses under the direction of Louise Powell. During the 1920-1921 academic year the course extended to eight months and provided a certificate in public health nursing upon completion.
